Jordan Spieth wins The Masters

Jordan Spieth held his nerve and produced a final day performance beyond his 21 years as he sealed a maiden Major title after finishing four shots clear of closest contenders Phil Mickelson and Justin Rose.

Philip Reid was at Augusta where he saw Spieth shatter record after record as collected the famous green jacket for the first time and moved up to number two in the world behind Rory McIlroy, who finished with a flourish after an ultimately disappointing weekend.

The stunning rise of Spieth and the performances of other young guns such as McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama, coupled with the return to form of Tiger Woods, should provide some intriguing battles in future Majors, writes Reid.

Manchester red again

Order was restored in Manchester yesterday as United produced another impressive display, dominating City in a 4-2 win at an electric Old Trafford.

Sergio Aguero gave the visitors an early lead but goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling saw United pull clear of their rivals in third spot and increase the pressure on City boss Manuel Pellegrini.

Elsewhere Chelsea took another big step towards the league title after Cesc Febregas finally broke QPR's resistance and hearts with a late strike following a Rob Green blunder and good work from Eden Hazard.

Dragons lateshow rattles Leinster

Leinster's hopes of finishing in the top four of the Pro 12 took a major blow yesterday after a late flurry of tries from Newport Gwent Dragons saw the South Wales side sneak a 25-22 win at Rodney Parade.

Two tries from Ben Te'o and 12 points from Jimmy Gopperth had steered Matt O'Connor's side into a 22-8 lead with just more than 20 minutes to go, however a Jack Dixon try was followed by a yellow card for Te'o and the hosts capitalised on the extra man with James Benjamin scoring twice late on.

Dublin and Cork through to league final

In the Allianz League semi-finals at Croke Park yesterday Dublin survived a scare holding off a spirited Monaghan side looking for their first final appearance in 29 years to win 0-17 to 0-16.

Jim Gavin's side will play Cork in the final after the Rebels produced a goal scoring blitz to romp home 4-11 to 0-19 against Donegal.
