Fowler wins Players Championship
World number one Rory McIlroy failed to produce a late charge yesterday to put himself in contention on the final day of the Players Championship, a tournament eventually won in thrilling fashion by Rickie Fowler, who saw off Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner in a three-hole play-off at Sawgrass in the early hours of the morning.
With Garcia in the lead and looking set to win the title he won in 2008, Fowler, who was one over for his round after a bogey on the 10th, played the last six holes six under, finishing birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie to take the clubhouse lead at 12 under par.
Sergio and Kisner produced brilliant finishes of their own to force a three-way, three hole play-off, which world number nine Fowler won in sudden death on a fourth hole.
McIlroy finished the tournament four shots off the lead on eight under after a closing 70, while Padraig Harrington produced one of the rounds of the day, a five under par 67, to finish tied for 42nd place on two under.
Gavin Moynihan picked up his second Irish Amateur Open yesterday, finishing three clear of the field in windy conditions at Royal Dublin.
Champions League all but gone for Liverpool
Manchester United's return to the Champions League next season is all but confirmed after Liverpool could only manage a draw away at Champions Chelsea yesterday. John Terry gave Jose Mourinho's side the lead before Steven Gerrard's long farewell continued with a headed equaliser, leaving Liverpool six points behind United with two games to play, and a far inferior goal difference.
Meanwhile Queens Park Rangers limped tamely out of the Premier League as they were eviscerated by Sergio Aguero and Manchester City, a 6-0 loss confirming their relegation to the Championship.
Ireland under 17s have an uphill battle to keep their European Championship hopes alive, they lost 2-0 to Italy meaning they must beat England in their final group game to reach the quarter finals.

Elsewhere, Andy Murray blitzed Rafael Nadal 6-3 6-2 in the final of the Madrid Open yesterday, continuing his post-wedding purple patch. To put Murray's achievement in perspective, more living men have walked on the moon than have beaten Nadal on clay.
