Deans favourite to replace O’Connor

With Matt O’Connor’s two season stint in charge of Leinster now at an end following a disappointing 2014/15 campaign, attention now turns to replacing him.

Heading the betting to succeed O'Connor is former Crusaders and Australia head coach Robbie Deans, who is currently an 8-15 favourite with Paddy Power to take the post.

The Kiwi is among a half dozen or so names being touted by the Leinster Professional Games Board, with the shortlist also believed to include former forwards coach Jono Gibbes and another ex-Wallabies coach Ewen McKenzie, while Grenoble’s Bernard Jackman is also likely to be in the running for the role.

Whoever does take over is likely to be the Louis van Gaal to O'Connor's David Moyes as Leinster look to build a new era in a post-Schmidt world, writes Gerry Thornley.

Meanwhile Ulster travel to play Glasgow at Scotstoun tonight in their Pro 12 semi-final and Neil Doak's men need to produce a big performance up top if they want to have something to show for their efforts this season.

Tug of war over Grealish

Ireland have a fight on their hands in order to try and secure the services of Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish, with England boss Roy Hodgson confirming members of the English FA have been in touch with the 19-year-old. However Hodgson opted against calling him up for next month's friendly in Dublin.

Raheem Sterling's agent Aidy Ward has insisted the want away 20-year-old won't be signing a new Liverpool deal no matter how lucrative it may prove, leading the club to cancel a meeting shcduled to discuss the forward's future. Ward also branded Jamie Carragher a "knob".

League of Ireland champions Dundalk travel to play fifth place St Pat's tonight looking to avoid another defeat at Richmond Park, the ground where the wheels of their title challenge fell off two years ago.

Elsewhere Bohemians welcome Bray to Dalymount Park, Shamrock Rovers travel to Cork, Derry play Sligo at the Brandywell and Galway travel to Drogheda.

McIlroy in the hunt

Rory McIlroy begins the second day of the PGA Championship six shots off the lead of Francesco Molinari, who carded an impressive 65 to take the overnight lead at Wentworth.

The world number one admitted to feeling angry at times during his round and will likely face disciplinary action for throwing his three-wood after a botched approach on the 17th. The pick of the Irish contingent was Peter Lawrie who shot 69.

Roscommon travel to London

Exiled in London, manager Paul Coggins spoke to Keith Duggan about welcoming his native Roscommon to Ruislip for Sunday's championship encounter.

Meanwhile Limerick hurling manager TJ Ryan has named three debutants in his side to play Clare in Sunday's Munster Championship opener, with Barry Hennessey, Seanie O'Brien and Cian Lynch all coming into the team.

Sunday's game is the hurling curtain raiser and while the performance is important the result doesn't matter that much, writes John Allen.
