Mayo too good for Galway

Mayo asserted their provincial dominance and remained on course for a fifth successive Connacht senior football title after a 1-15 to 2-8 win over Galway in a packed Salthill yesterday.

It was Mayo's fifth consecutive win over their old rivals, and while it was a tighter affair than many recent instalments of the rivalry Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly's side always seemed to have an extra gear, writes Sean Moran.

Donegal steam out of the blocks

Donegal came roaring out of the blocks at the Athletic Grounds to blow away a stunned Armagh side, winning 2-11 to 0-8 in a fixture which was effectively over after 20 minutes, writes Keith Duggan.

Despite his side's comprehensive defeat Armagh manager Kieran McGeeny stood by his comments made last week which suggested Donegal were not the same physical proposition as Kerry or Dublin.

Kerry ease through the gears

Malachy Clerkin was at Semple Stadium to see defending All-Ireland champions Kerry start slowly before moving smoothly through the gears to ease past a spirited but wasteful Tipperary side 2-14 to 2-8.

Wicklow spurned a golden opportunity to secure a first win over Meath since 1957 yesterday, with Meath's Graham Reilly and Andrew Tormey scoring 2-13 between them to spare their side's blushes and see them to a 2-19 to 3-12 win at Pairc Tailteann, watched by Gavin Cummiskey.

Cork showed their class to progress smoothly into the Munster finalfollowing a 1-20 to 1-9 win over Clare, while Westmeath blitzed Wexford in the final 15 minutes to win their Leinster Championship quarter-final 1-21 to 0-15.

Ireland likely to miss Euros party

Ireland's 1-1 draw with Scotland at the Aviva on Saturday was the latest disappointing result in what has been a frustrating European Championships qualification campaign, one which could result in Martin O'Neill's side being the sole Celtic absentee from France next summer, writes Keith Duggan.

Saturday's draw was one of Ireland's best competitive displays in the last five years, however their inability to force a result highlighted an undeniable lack of talent in the squad, writes Ken Early.

O'Neill's decision to substitute Norwich schemer Wes Hoolahan while Ireland were desperately pushing for a second raised many eyebrows, and it was this decision which ultimately cost them their chances of winning the game, says Brian Kerr.

One side who will be present at Euro 2016 is England, who maintained their 100% record in qualifying with a 3-2 win away at Slovenia yesterday, with captain Wayne Rooney's winner moving him within a goal of Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time record.

Wood wins in Austria

Greg Wood produced a fine closing round of 67 to capitalise on a meltdown from overnight leader Gregory Bourdy and lift the Lyoness Open in Austria, while in Memphis Fabian Gomez won the St Jude Classic by four shots ahead of England's Greg Owen.

Sole Power looking for hat-trick

Sole Power will be looking to make history by winning a third King's Stand Stakes at Ascot tomorrow and with five antepost favourites in eight Group 1 races it could be a good week for Irish racing.

Middling start in Baku

With the €87 million opening ceremony already a distant memory the European Games are in full swing, but it's been a lukewarm start writes Ian O'Riordan.
