Rory out of Bridgestone Invitational

World number one Rory McIlroy has been forced to pull out of his defence of the Bridgestone Invitational as he continues his recovery from the serious ankle injury which kept him out of the British Open at St Andrews.

McIlroy’s withdrawal has casted further doubts over whether or not he will be fit for August’s USPGA Championship, while Jordan Spieth could leapfrog the 26-year-old into the world’s top spot at Firestone next week.

In his column Shane Lowry reflects on a disappointing week at St Andrews, where he felt he failed to live up to the expectations of those who thought he had a real chance of winning the tournament.

Voice of racing dies

The racing world and beyond have been paying their respects to legendary commentator Peter O'Sullevan, known as the voice of racing, who has died age 97.

There was success in the Galway Plate yesterday for 19-year-old Johnny Burke and Shanahan's Turn, winning comfortably from The Paparrazi Kid and Sadler's Risk. Earlier on Willie Mullins and Ruby Walsh won the opening race for the third day on the run, this time with young hurdler Thomas Hobson.

Today's feature is the Galway Hurdle and Gordon Elliott can finally secure the race which has been eluding him with The Game Changer, currently in to 16-1.

Mourinho has some facts for Rafa

Jose Mourinho has responded to claims from Rafael Benitez's wife suggesting her husband always has to clean up the Chelsea manager's mess by saying Benitez had destroyed his European Cup winning Inter Milan side within six months of his departure. Mourinho also suggested she keep an eye on Benitez's diet and waistline.

A late Dedryck Boyata goal saved Celtic's blushes andgave them a slender first leg advantage in their Champions League qualifier against Azerbaijan's Qarabag last night. Boyata's 82nd minute header gave Ronny Deila's men a 1-0 win at Parkhead.
