Arsenal thrashed by Bayern

Arsenal's Champions League hopes are in tatters after they were trounced 5-1 by Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena last night.

Arsene Wenger’s side were left with a mountain to climb when Robert Lewandowski scored the opener after just 11 minutes in Bavaria and they were comprehensively outplayed and outclassed throughout, with goals from David Alaba, Arjen Robben and a Thomas Muller brace giving Bayern a resounding win.

With Olympiakos coming from behind to beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 in Athens Arsenal are now six points behind the Greeks with two games to play in Group F, and have an inferior head to head record and goal difference.

Elsewhere it wasn't pretty but Chelsea battled their way to a priceless win over Dynamo Kyiv at Stamford Bridge.

Aleksander Dragovic’s 78th minute equaliser, following his first half own goal, suggested another frustrating result was in store for Jose Mourinho, but Willian’s stunning free-kick five minutes later was enough to secure three points and move his side to second in Group G.

Kilkenny dominate All-Stars

The 2015 hurling All-Stars have been revealed and, to absolutely nobody's surprise, Kilkenny have dominated the awards in much the same way they did the All-Ireland championship.

Three other counties have been represented in the All-Stars – Waterford, Tipperary and beaten finalists Galway – but it is the Cats who have cleaned up with seven of their players being selected.

Rory off to strong start in Shanghai

Among the seven chosen is corner back Paul Murphy who picks up the award for a fourth time, while nominees for the player of the year TJ Reid and Richie Hogan were also selected.

Meanwhile Rory McIlroy recovered from food poisoning sufficiently enough to shoot a four under par opening round of 68 at the WGC-Champions in Shanghai.

His opening day efforts leave him five shots off the lead of South Africa’s Branden Grace, while Shane Lowry is well off the pace following a 74.

Foley wants to keep Zebo

Munster coach Anthony Foley has insisted his province wants to retain the services of Simon Zebo, whose provincial contract runs out at the end of the season and according to reports has attracted interest from French giants Toulouse.

Meanwhile Leo Cullen has confirmed Luke Fitzgerald will not play in Friday night's game against Pro 12 leaders Scarlets as he recovers froom a neck and shoulder injury which forced him off during last Sunday's win over Treviso.

Athletics scandal

Athletics is facing the biggest scandal in its history after the former president of the IAAF Lamine Diack was placed under investigation by French police on suspicion of taking bribes from Russia Athletics to cover up positive doping tests.
