Manchester United sink Liverpool

Manchester United reignited their seemingly dwindling hopes of Champions League qualification and made it four wins in a row over bitter rivals Liverpool with a 1-0 victory at Anfield yesterday afternoon.

Wayne Rooney’s purple patch continued as he landed the killer blow in the 78th minute, rifling home from six yards after Marouane Fellaini’s header bounced back off the crossbar.

It was a game shorn of quality and another largely insipid performance Louis van Gaal's side but nonetheless Rooney's goal sent the travelling support in the Anfield Road end into raptures and moved United within seven points of league leaders Arsenal.

Arsenal return to the top

Arsene Wenger's side moved back top on goal difference after a goalless draw away at Stoke City yesterday, Jack Butland and Petr Cech the two standout players as the Gunners'poor run in the Potteries continues.

Longford stun Dublin

2016 may prove to be another golden year for Dublin but one piece of silverware which will elude them is the O'Byrne Cup after they were stunned by Longford, going down 1-12 to 0-9 at Pearse Park.

It was Longford’s first victory over Dublin for 16 years, and while boss Denis Connerton insisted his side won’t be getting carried away, victory represents a remarkable turnaround from their 27 point Championship defeat to Jim Gavin’s side last year.

Elsewhere in Connacht Stephen Rochford suffered his first defeat as Mayo boss, his side beaten 0-13 to 0-10 by an impressive Roscommon side.

Match-fixing claims hang over Australian Open

The Australian Open tennis has begun in Melbourne with the shadow of an alleged match-fixing scandal, involving a Grand Slam winner and seven other players in the main draw, hanging heavy over the sport.

Hints of a match-fixing cover-up are set to be aired by the BBC on Tuesday night but have been rejected by Chris Kermode, the chief executive of the Association of Tennis Professionals.

Killultagh Vic’s Leopardstown recovery

Ruby Walsh and Killultagh Vic produced a remarkable recovery to take the Grade Two Novice Steeplechase at Leopardstown yesterday.

The 2-7 favourite was leading comfortably before over pitching at the last and heading nose first into the turf, but Walsh managed to stay on and spur Willie Mullins’ seven-year-old to an improbable victory.
