McIlroy misses out at Doral

Rory McIlroy missed the chance to pick up a maiden win in the WGC-Cadillac Championship after a disappointing final round of 74 saw him finish third at Doral, two strokes behind winner Adam Scott.

McIlroy took a three stroke lead into Sunday and led by four strokes after six holes, but while his new putting stroke seemed to be working his approach play was poor and dropped shots on seven, nine and 13 saw him slip out of contention.

Manchester United's season continued in a similar frustrating vein yesterday as they were beaten 1-0 by West Bromwich Albion following a turgid performance at the Hawthorns, a result which makes hopes of top four qualification slim once again.

Meanwhile Crystal Palace's terrible league form continued as Liverpool came from behind to beat them 2-1 at Selhurst Park, Christian Benteke's controversial 96th minute penalty providing the hammer blow for Alan Pardew's side who are now without a league win since Decemeber.

Kerry beat Donegal in tempestuous encounter

Kerry boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice and Donegal manager Rory Gallagher were both called to the referee's room at half time of yesterday's tempestuous league encounter in Traleeafter the opening 35 minutes saw Eddie Kinsella produce two red and two black cards.

Kerry won a high-tempo encounter 1-13 to 1-8, handing Donegal their first defeat of the league campaign.

Elsewhere Mayo picked up their first win, seeing off Monaghan 2-11 to 1-12 in Clones, while Roscommon took a big stride towards cementing their place in the top flight by beating Down 1-12 to 0-6.

In Division Two yesterday Galway beat Meath 0-15 to 0-12, while Fermanagh hammered Laois 1-17 to 0-10.

Waterford edge Tipp

Waterford remain top of the hurling Division 1A after they crept past Tipperary 1-18 to 1-17 in Thurles thanks to a last second free from Austin Gleeson, while a late surge from Kilkenny saw them beat Galway 0-21 to 1-14 in a repeat of last year's All-Ireland final.
