Golf

Rory McIlroy played two stunning fairway woods over the closing three holes to help him claim the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open at The K Club on Sunday.

The World No 3 had no sooner took with one hand though, but he’d given back with the other - donating his €666,660 first prize winnings to his own Rory Foundation.

For McIlroy, a winner of four Majors and two WGCs in an honour-laden career, this victory - especially given his association as tournament host - was emotional. He had to fight back the tears walking up the 18th fairway to the green:

“I’d rank this up here for me personally like a WGC, just below the Majors. It’s one of the things that I wanted to sort of tick off on my CV and thankfully I’ve been able to do it.”

Soccer

Barcelona completed their domestic double last night with a 2-0 Copa del Rey final win over Europa League champions Sevilla - although both goals came in extra-time against a team who had won Europe's second tier competition just four day previous. Jordi Alba and Neymar were the two goalscorers - as three players were dismissed with red cards over the 120 minutes.

Also last night, Jamie Vardy scored the winner as England beat Turkey 2-1 as their preparations continue for Euro 2016 - his strike partner Harry Kane was also among the goals, while the Tottenham man also missed a penalty.

GAA

Tipperary begun the 2016 Munster hurling championship with a very comfortable win over Cork in miserable conditions - while first-half goals gave Mickey Harte's Tyrone team an impressive win over 13-man Derry in the Ulster football quarter-final. In Connacht Roscommon eased past the challenge of Leitrim who were down to 12 men by the final whistle, having conceded 1-21.

While Westmeath and Offaly both secured passage to the last eight of the Leinster hurling championship - after respective round-robin victories over Carlow and Kerry.

Racing

Meanwhile Jet Setting defeated the odds-on Minding in the Irish 1,000 Guineas at the Curragh.
