Soccer: Euro 2016

Ireland captain Robbie Keane expects to be fit for at least two of the group matches at the upcoming European Championships - confident that the calf injury that almost cost him a place on the plane to France will have been cleared up in time.

Meanwhile in last night's Euro 2016 warm-up friendly a late Chris Smalling header secured England the win over a 10-man experimental Portugal side.

Ireland rugby head coach Joe Schmidt has been forced into four changes to his squad for the three-Test series in South Africa after injuries ruled out Jonathan Sexton, Rob and Dave Kearney, and Luke Fitzgerald.

Ian Madigan, Tiernan O'Halloran, Craig Gilroy and Matt Healy have been called in to fill the gaps - with Paddy Jackson and Madigan both in the running to fill Sexton's vacant number 10 jersey for the first Test in Cape Town on Saturday week. "Those are the decisions that we'll make at the latest by Thursday," explained Schmidt. "We'll try to give the 10 particularly an indication by Tuesday so that they get enough time in the saddle to really lead guys around."

GAA

All-Ireland champions Dublin last night named 11 of the side that started last September's final for Saturday's Leinster championship clash with Laois in Nowlan Park. Former Footballer of the Year Michael Darragh Macauley is named ahead of Dennis Bastick at centrefield, while Kevin McManamon gets the nod over Paul Mannion and Paddy Andrews at corner forward.

Opponents Laois welcome back Colm Begley and Conor Meredith, who both missed the first round win over Wicklow last month.

Golf

Rory McIlroy was back in action at the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio on Thursday, carding a one-under 71 that left him well well adrift of early clubhouse leader Dustin Johnson.

Aware that the upcoming US Open at Oakmont will feature some of the speediest greens in golf, McIlroy has decided to switch back to a conventional right hand below left grip despite winning the recent Irish Open at The K Club with a low left hand style.

What to watch out for

It's semi-final day at the French Open - with Andy Murray taking on reigning men's champion Stan Wawrinka, as well as Serena Williams and Novak Djovokic both also playing their last four matches.
