Soccer: Euro 2016

Ireland attacker Jonathan Walters is 'pretty doubtful' for Ireland's next Euro 2016 Group E encounter this Saturday against Belgium.

The Stoke City player won his fitness battle to start in Monday night’s draw with Sweden- although a flare up of his Achilles problem forced him to limp off in the second half.

Last night Iceland began their first ever major tournament with a draw against Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. Birkir Bjarnason’s equaliser stunned the Portuguese, with Iceland defending heroically to hold out for a famous result. One man who wasn’t too impressed though was Ronaldo - “I thought they’d won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end, it was unbelievable.

"When they don't try to play and just defend, defend, defend, this in my opinion shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition."

Tonight hosts France will look to make it two from two as they take on Albania in the 8pm kick-off. Before that it's Russia versus Slovakia at 2pm - where the focus will be as much on the action in the stands as it is on the pitch. Yesterday Uefa punished Russia with a suspended disqualification - so any more fan violence and they are going home.

GAA

Darragh Ó Sé's column this morning is sure to irk some Cork die-hards - in the wake of the rebels' Munster semi-final defeat to Tipperary, a first in 72 years, the Kerry legend asks are Cork now immune to the shame of defeat? "Do these defeats even leave a sting anymore? If the dog who turns up to the butcher's door looking for scraps keeps getting a boot in the arse from the butcher, he'll eventually just stay over on the far side of the street."

Rugby

Gordon D'Arcy meanwhile says that Ireland's victory over South Africa last weekend was one for the players - "My generation brought Ireland past the era of fearing such opponents (without ever beating the All Blacks or winning in South Africa). The current and coming generations are closing the deal now."

Golf

Rory McIlroy says that winning the US Open at Oakmont would be his biggest accomplishment - and he's hopeful a patient approach will do the job.

“I feel like I’ve got a good game plan for the course. It’s just a matter of going out there and executing it.”
