On December 16th 1974, Helen Hicks, one of the game's earliest woman professionals, died. Before joining the paid ranks in 1934 as a 23-year-old, Hicks gained the distinction of beating the great Glenna Collett Vare by 2 and 1 in the final of the 1931 US Women's Amateur. Born in Cedarhurst, New York, in 1911, she was a member of the first US Curtis Cup team in 1932.

Teaser: In strokeplay, the stipulated round was 16 holes, i.e. the 13th and 14th holes were omitted. After playing the 12th hole, one group elected to play the 13th and 14th holes without counting their scores for those holes. They then completed the round. What is the ruling?

Answer: The stipulated round consists of playing the holes of the course in the sequence prescribed by the committee. These competitors were in breach of the conditions of the competition and the committee should in this case impose a penalty of disqualification under Rule 33-7.
