Only July 21st 1930, Gene Littler was born in California. Winner of the US Amateur in 1953, the year before Arnold Palmer, he turned professional the following year after capturing the San Diego Open while still in amateur ranks. On seeing him in action, Gene Sarazen was moved to remark, " Here's a kid with a perfect swing like Sam Snead's.....only better." Littler knew he was good, but rather than aim for the top of his craft, he was happy to make a decent living from golf, while increasing his collection of vintage cars. He had 29 wins on the regular US Tour including the 1961 US Open.
Teaser: A player's ball went into the a bunker. The player accidentally kicked a pine cone and it rolled into the bunker. He picked up the pine cone which was not interfering with his stance or the area of his intended swing. Did he incur a penalty?
Answer: Yes. A pine cone is a loose impediment and may not be removed when the impediment and the ball lie in a hazard( Rule 13-4c). By removing the pine cone from the bunker, the players incurred a penalty of loss of hole, in matchplay or two strokes in strokeplay for breach of Rule13-4c.
