Golf: Harrison Frazar, Matt Kuchar and William McGirt were in a three-way tie for the lead when bad light brought a premature end to the first round of The Barclays in New Jersey.

The tournament was also disrupted for three hours by rain but Frazar was in impressive form at the FedEx Cup play-off event, sinking seven birdies in a flawless seven-under-par 64 at Edison.

His fellow Americans Kuchar and McGirt failed to finish their rounds, completing 16 and 11 holes respectively.

Kuchar putted eight birdies and a bogie while McGirt, the PGA tour rookie, was enjoying a superb round, sinking seven birdies in his last eight holes.

Frazar said: "I wanted to get done today. With the way the weather is coming, I didn't want to have to sit around and play too much tomorrow or too much Saturday. It's going to be a long week by the time this thing is over."

The first round will resume at 7.15am (12.15pm Irish time) local time with the second round starting half an hour later but the spectre of Hurricane Irene is hanging over the tournament with the possibility of a 36-hole Saturday ruled out.

Vijay Singh is tied for fourth with Jonathan Byrd and Chris Stroud.

Singh overcame a double bogey early on to post a six-under-par 65 while Byrd had a mixed round which included an eagle, six birdies and two bogies. Stroud was six under through 13 holes.

Four players are another shot back - Charley Hoffman, Adam Scott and Ryan Palmer, each completing their rounds of 66, and D.A. Points, who had completed 14 holes.

Justin Rose, Pádraig Harrington and Sergio Garcia were the leading Europeans in a 16-way tie one shot further back.
