Three Rock's chance to get back on track

Possibly the turn of the century will spur two of Leinster's most venerable club sides into a renaissance

Possibly the turn of the century will spur two of Leinster's most venerable club sides into a renaissance. Three Rock Rovers, who languish in mid-table, and Avoca, third from the bottom, need to stir themselves in the senior league and a pair of ideal tests come tomorrow as they tackle Railway Union and Monsktown, respectively.

One of Rovers' few really crisp performances in the first half of the campaign came when they beat Railway 4-3 at Grange Road. Since then, the Sandymount brigade have become firmer in their approach and, with their African-O'Briens blend, may well become one of the province's qualifiers for the all-Ireland play-offs.

Three Rock, though, are not too far off the pace and assuming Alan Bothwell is back to full fitness after his month's absence with a broken nose, the game at Park Avenue seems likely to be the most evenly matched of the day, especially if Liam Canning and Rick Johnson make new millennium appearances.

There is also going to be little between Monkstown and Avoca at Rathdown. Since these sides drew 2-2 in the autumn, Monkstown - with Ali Murdoch, David Jenkins and Simon Cox to the fore - have progressed to share fourth spot with Railway. Yet Avoca are well capable of moving into a more respectable position and one can expect Trevor Dagg and David Hanna to give Galahad Goulet the strongest support.

Corinthians have been playing steadily since they gained a last-gasp 2-1 win over YMCA earlier in the season and unless they have failed to recover from festive abandon, they will be expected to repeat that result at Whitechurch Park tomorrow to retain third place behind Pembroke Wanderers and Glenanne.

Continuing their grand slam quest, Glenanne will not be troubled by Clontarf at Tallaght nor will Pembroke, flu permitting, come under too much pressure from Aer Lingus at Ballsbridge.

Pembroke followers may be more focused on their second XI whose joust with Three Rock II at Grange Road promises to be one of the best quality Irish Junior Cup ties. Figures such as Andy Cooke and Rovers' Robin Madeley may yet be chasing medals, though Harlequins II, at home to Monkstown II, retain ambitions of holding on to the trophy.
