Golf: In this week of all weeks, Golf Masters is pleased to lend a (right-) hand to the National Association of Left-Handed Golfers, Ireland.
They are looking for a missing trophy presented by Joe Carr in the 1960's. We wish to help their efforts by offering one of our prized items of Cutter & Buck golf apparel in return.
The Irish version of NALG contest their national championship every year for the Bob Charles trophy which the New Zealander presented to the association within months of becoming the first left-handed winner of a major in 1963. It is like a small version of the Sam Maguire.
Also in the 1960's, Joe Carr donated a sizeable trophy, possibly for the Leinster championship, but when the association went into near-terminal decline in the 1970s it was forgotten about. Revived in 1986, it is now stronger than ever and hoping to host the world left-handed championships in 2005, NALG would love to find it.
This information came to light courtesy of Golf Masters veteran and a former president of NALG, Ireland Ron Attwooll who will be among the competitors at this year's world event. And where will that be played? Canada. And will Mike Weir play on home soil? Probably not, but if he does, he will be favourite.
The best of Ron's nine Golf Masters teams, and it's not saying much, is the 3,445th-ranked 'Leftie's United' for whom Weir was the only scoring player this week. A Golf Masters shirt should lift his spirits.
