US Tour Wachovia Championship: David Toms ended a victory drought of almost two years on Sunday, surviving a quadruple- bogey eight at the last to win the Wachovia Championship by two shots.
The 2001 US PGA champion, whose last triumph came at the Michelob Championship at Kingsmill 19 months ago, closed with a one-over-par 73 to finish at 10-under-par 278.
Despite his untidy performance at the 72nd hole, where he four-putted after hitting his drive into trees, he secured his eighth PGA Tour title and a cheque for $1,008,000.
"I just felt at peace this week with my golf game and the whole surroundings were good," said the 36-year-old Toms. "I felt like I was in total control over what was going on, at least for 71 holes."
Vijay Singh fired a final-round 68 to share second place with Brent Geiberger (69) and Robert Gamez (70).
Three-time major winner Nick Price of Zimbabwe, who had led or shared the lead through the first two rounds, also returned a 70 to finish a further stroke back at seven under, in a tie for fifth with Kirk Triplett.
For all but the 72nd hole, Toms was in impressive control on Sunday, after starting the final round with a five-shot cushion over JP Hayes, Triplett and Gamez.
His misadventures at the tournament's finishing hole added plenty of drama, although he could have made a nine and still won.
