HOCKEY: It was a topsy-turvy weekend in Dublin circles, for Old Alexandra, after beating Trinity 6-2 in the second round of the Irish Senior Cup at Santry on Saturday, were contained to a scoreless draw by Glenanne in the Leinster League at Tallaght yesterday.
Furthermore, Trinity found reserves of energy to hold Pembroke Wanderers to 2-2. So remarkably, the two leading teams dropped points to the two sides at the foot of the table.
It was a hugely encouraging result for Glenanne, for they had lost all eight of their previous league matches and conceded 50 goals. On this occasion, Laura Doyle was outstanding between the posts while Suzanne Colton excelled at sweeper and Mary Walton spearheaded the resistance further upfield.
This put quite a dent in Alexandra's championship aspirations, while yesterday's exploit by Trinity at Santry also dealt a sobering blow to the hopes of Pembroke who, though the dominant side, could reply only in the last quarter through Sarah Clarke and Kathryn Henderson.
The students had broken away twice, first for Caoilfhoinn Rowan to finish off a thrust by Laura McCoy, and then for the captain, Kim Wallis, to get a touch to a shot from Kathy Griffen to claim the second.
In a Saturday cup tie, under-18 international Carol McGowan was the match-winner for Corinthians as they eliminated Cork C of I 2-0 at Whitechurch Park.
