CRICKET: The first of the Ireland women's team's three one-day internationals against New Zealand was washed out at Castle Avenue yesterday, writes Karl Johnston

New Zealand, the reigning world champions, batted first and notched up 249 for 6 wickets. But after that the rain came and after the match had been reduced to 25 overs, play eventually was abandoned.

New Zealand's top scorer was Rebecca Rolls who hit an impressive 88 while the other opener Nicola Payne contributed 60 runs.

There were also useful contributions from Fional Fraser with an undefeated 26, and Sara McGlashan with 25.
