Defoe 'receives' threat from fans

PORTSMOUTH striker Jermain Defoe said yesterday he had received threats from Portsmouth fans furious about him seeking a return to Tottenham Hotspur one year after leaving the club.

The 26-year-old England striker said: I have absolutely no idea how they got hold of my number but some of the calls have made me feel sick to my stomach. I have reported it to officials at the club, but cannot accept that it is coming from people with a balanced state of mind. It has infuriated and upset my family and left me wondering what on earth possesses people to do things like that."

Downing to request transfer

MIDDLESBROUGH'S resolve to hang on to midfielder Stewart Downing will be tested to the full today when he hands in a written transfer request. Middlesbrough chief executive Keith Lamb has already dismissed a bid - thought to be in the region of €6million from Tottenham as "derisory". However, Downing's decision to submit a transfer request could force their hand.

Tevez unhappy over speculation

MANCHESTER United striker Carlos Tevez has revealed his disappointment over speculation suggesting he had rejected a new contract to stay at the club. Tevez was keen to stress that he will sit down and discuss a new deal with United at the "appropriate time".
