John Gosden shared a 62 to 1 treble with Olivier Peslier at Goodwood yesterday but was kicking himself for not making it four. Decorated Hero led the way with a Group Three success in the Charlton Hunt Supreme Stakes. Victories with Bel Canto and Young Josh followed.

But he blamed his own tactics for the defeat of Tote Cesarewitch contender Media Star in the NFU Rated Handicap. Gosden ordered a more patient strategy for Media Star, who had failed by a neck to make most of the running on his last start in the Ebor Handicap.

But the gelding was held by the Sean Woods-trained Georgia Venture, who prevailed by a length in receipt of 22lb. William Hill pushed Media Star out to 12 to 1 third favourite (from 10 to 1) for the Newmarket marathon though Gosden rated it a satisfactory trial.

"I probably made a mistake by telling Olivier Peslier that the main race was the Cesarewitch and at the end of the day we have probably been a bit careful," he said.

"I should have left it to him and let him make the running instead of giving him complicated instructions and telling him the horse wasn't freshened up. It was my fault.

"We didn't go as hard as we did last time here because of the Cesarewitch. But he's had a good blow and run a nice trial, that's the main thing."

Grand servant Decorated Hero added his second Pattern win of the season when holding Restructure by a length and a quarter with Nwaamis, who finished lame, third. A step up in class to the Group Two Challenge Stakes is now likely, with the Group One Prix de la Foret also an option.

Dick Hern clinched his 115th success at Goodwood with one of his last two runners at the track when Khafaaq took the Scats Handicap.
