THERE were mixed fortunes for UCC's men's and women's hockey teams in Dublin yesterday when they opened the defence of the Mauritius and Chilean Cups they won in Cork last year.

The men's team lost their first Pool A match 3-2 to the University of Ulster, but UCC's women had a comfortable opening to their Chilean Cup campaign when they cruised to a 4-0 victory over the same northern opposition.

Trinity College finished yesterday's programme of matches unbeaten in both competitions: the women beat UCG and Queen's and the men ran out 4-0 winners over hosts the Royal College of Surgeons.

The top scorers of the day were UCD, who thrashed a weary Limerick team 9-1 in the day's final Pool B match in the Mauritius Cup.
