Just two days after they won their fourth successive Chilean Cup, at the inter-varsity tournament in Jordanstown, Trinity College showed no after effects from their week's exertions when they beat the club at the bottom of Leinster Senior A, Railway Union, 3-0 at Santry Avenue. The win keeps Trinity in touch with the top three - Old Alexandra, Hermes and Loreto - all of whom had comfortable victories on Saturday, with title-holders Hermes registering the biggest win of the Senior A season so far.
They inflicted a 9-0 drubbing on Muckross at Belfield in a fixture that in recent seasons would have been a potential league decider. During the summer, though, Muckross lost almost all the players who made them one of the country's leading clubs in the past decade and they are now, sadly, facing a battle with Railway and Glenanne against relegation to Senior B.
Carol Devine opened the scoring after just seven minutes at Belfield and hat-tricks from Hilda Barron and Mary Logue, added to Jenny Burke and Shirine Young's goals, brought the tally to nine. At Milltown, Old Alexandra, who have played one more game than Hermes, retained top spot in Senior A with a 4-0 win over UCD, who, perhaps, were still shell-shocked from their 10-9 penalty strokes defeat by Trinity in Thursday's Chilean Cup final.
Two goals from Cathy McKean helped third-placed Loreto to a 4-0 win away to Genesis but Pembroke Wanderers lost ground on the top four when they were held to a scoreless draw by Glenanne at Serpentine Avenue.
In Ulster, Pegasus and Portadown are still neck and neck at the top of Section One following their wins at the weekend. The prolific Jill Orbinson sent Portadown on their way to a 3-1 win at Ballymoney while her international team-mate Claire McMahon scored twice in a 40 home win for Pegasus against Ards. Like UCD, the University of Limerick struggled to recover in time from their inter-varsity efforts, losing 3-0 away to Bandon in the Munster Senior League.
