"Something had to change," he added, "and unfortunately for Roddy Collins, the manager has taken the rap."
Courtenay had reappointed Collins who had been sacked by his predecessor, Michael Knighton, shortly before the club changed hands. "We're sorry to see him go because he's done very well for us," said Shamrock Rovers manager Liam Buckley, "but it's a great opportunity for the lad and we wish him all the best with his future."
Under-21 international Clive Delaney, meanwhile, is expected to join St Patrick's Athletic before Sunday evening's transfer deadline. The former UCD player scored for Sunderland's reserves midweek but Mick McCarthy declined to offer him a contract.
