Dr McKenna Cup Tyrone made it three straight wins to qualify for the Dr McKenna Cup final with a floodlit victory over UUJ last night.
The first official fixture under lights sanctioned by the Ulster Council attracted a big crowd to Carrickmore, where the All-Ireland champions were too strong for the students.
UUJ raced into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead, thanks largely to the accuracy of Paul Rafferty from frees and play, and some enterprising midfield play from Enda Clarke and Philip Loughran. But once Colm McCullagh began to display his skills, Tyrone got going. The exciting newcomer knocked over four points, combining well with Gerard Cavlan, who also hit the target, as did substitute Brian Dooher.
But UUJ were still in touch at the break, a Rafferty free narrowing the gap to two points.
Tyrone turned around with a 0-7 to 0-5 lead, and a brilliant Brian McGuigan goal within a minute of the restart effectively decided the contest. Tyrone played some sparkling football, typified by the move finished off by Michael Coleman's point, which made it 1-10 to 0-6.
And with McGuigan showing exceptional form, Tyrone finished confidently, although UUJ were unfortunate not to hit a consolation goal when Seán Cavanagh's shot crashed against the angle of post and crossbar.
