GAA: UCC recorded a deserved victory, 2-10 to 0-12, over NUIG in a Sigerson Cup first-round tie at Dangan, Galway, yesterday while UUJ defeated Waterford IT by 2-11 to 0-4 at the Waterford Crystal centre.
UCC were in front by six points, 1-7 to 0-4, at the interval. Their goal arrived after 11 minutes from Tom Kenny while their second came six minutes after the resumption through Cork senior player Conrad Murphy, which put his team in control, 2-8 to 0-5.
UUJ advanced with ease by laying the foundation for victory in the opening quarter, at the end of which they led by 1-4 to 0-1. Their goal coming from full forward Paddy Bradley in the 15th minute, setting them up for a half-time lead of 1-6 to 0-1. Leading 1-10 to 0-3 with five minutes remaining, Oliver Gaughran sealed victory for the title holders with a goal from a penalty.
