UCC push on with late points

UCC 1-12 GMIT 1-10

UCC 1-12 GMIT 1-10

UCC RECOVERED from the concession of a goal by GMIT’s Conor O’Donnell to pick up their second win of the Fitzgibbon Cup in Carnmore, Galway, yesterday and book a home quarter-final. It took two late points from Tipperary senior Shane Bourke and Waterford senior Patrick Mahony to push the Cork side to the win as a determined GMIT were unlucky to lose.

GMIT, with Limerick’s Wayne McNamara in superb form at midfield, led by 0-6 to 0-5 at the break, but UCC cruised ahead when Stephen Moylan made the most of some sloppy defending to crash a ground stroke past Joe Keane.

With a bitter gale in their faces, GMIT set about retaking the lead and a free from Jimmy Gelston and O’Donnell’s goal in the 42nd minute gave them a deserved advantage. But Bourke, Mahony and Dan McCormack upped their game and all landed good points, which sees UCC top their group and qualify for the quarter-finals.
