A RECORD winning sequence came within sight of UCD yesterday, when they crushed Dublin University by 10-2 in the annual golf colours match at Portmarnock. It gave the Belfield students a seventh successive victory in the series, only one short of the record eight-in-a-row they set from 1939 to 1946.

Peter Lawrie, the UCD captain seemed to be anticipating a much tighter match, however, from the way he arranged his forces. "I expected them to do a bit of juggling," said the reigning Irish Close champion, with a grin. Either way, he and Fionnan Murray were not unduly troubled in winning by 4 and 3 to give UCD a clean sweep of the morning "four-somes.

Gale-force southerly winds became a crucial factor in play over the third and second nines. The 17th presented a particularly daunting challenge as Trinity's John Donovan and David Lynch discovered in the top foursomes.

So, Trinity remain in a trough dating back to 1991. Having gained their last win in the series in 1989, they halved the 1990 encounter.
