Athlone IT ... 1-09 UCD ... 1-06There was yet more Sigerson heartache for UCD in their quarter-final as they lost out by three points to Athlone IT at Sligo's Grange grounds yesterday.
Beaten finalists for the past two years, the Dublin side were clearly missing Offaly's Ciarán McManus who was controversially sent off against GMIT and found the going tough from the start.
Athlone, in contrast, clearly benefited from the fielding of Mayo's NFL winners James Gill and Trevor Mortimer, and Westmeath's Fergal Wilson and thus booked their semi-final meeting with hosts Sligo IT.
Roscommon's Stephen Lohan was also in the mix for Athlone and they reproduced the form that saw them thrash Queen's in the last round, and they look to be gaining the necessary momentum to win the title outright.
It was Wilson's five-point contribution that helped inspire Athlone IT to victory.
SCORERS - Athlone IT: F Wilson 0-5; T Mortimer 1-0; S Lohan 0-3, D O'Brien 0-1.
UCD: B McDonald 1-0, P Lawless 0-3, B Hanny 0-2, N Crawford 0-1.
