WFAI Cup final/UCD 2 Lifford 0: UCD retained the WFAI Cup with a 2-0 victory over Clare side Lifford at a sweltering Richmond Park yesterday.
Carmel Kissane was UCD's heroine as she grabbed both goals in an entertaining game as UCD retained the trophy they won for the first time in their history last season.
After an evenly matched first half UCD broke the deadlock on 47 minutes, Kissane heading home inside the six-yard area after captain Sylvia Gee had helped on Sharon Horgan's right wing corner.
And in the 66th minute, Kissane made the game safe with a sweet shot off the post after Gee had split open the Lifford defence with a slide rule pass.
UCD could have added a third with Gee hitting the crossbar moments after the second goal but Lifford will look back and wonder at what might have been, with Irene Hehir and Anne Curtin both guilty of missing first half opportunities while Mary Ryan was only inches away from scoring an audacious lob early in the second half.
