COLLINGWOOD CUP: University College Dublin turned on the style to qualify for today's final of the Collingwood Cup (Intervarsity soccer championship) by outscoring Queen's University Belfast 2-0 at The Farm, Cork, yesterday. They will meet UCC in the final (The Mardyke, 2.30 p.m.) after they came from behind to overcome a tenacious University of Ulster Coleraine side 2-1.
UCD scored their first goal after 28 minutes after John Molloy penetrated into the penalty area and after he forced the ball past goalkeeper James Myers, Michael McGready could not avoid turning it into his own net in a vain attempt to clear.
The second goal came when Oisín Crean made sure Pat Burke's shot crossed the line in the 44th minute.
UCC needed outstanding performances from goalkeeper Brendan O'Connell and centre forward Paul Rose to see off Coleraine who had taken the lead after 19 minutes through a Richie Bambury own goal.
UCC equalised when Rose scored in the 40th minute and it was Rose again in the 77th minute who grabbed a splendid winner.
