UEFA Cup Third Round, Second Leg Previews

David O'Leary's repeated contention that his Leeds United squad is too small to be challenging for major honours on more than one front, and that the players he has are at their "max" in terms of commitment, will be endorsed tonight - in his eyes at least - when he fields three substitutes instead of five for an important European match.

Leeds lead 2-1 from the first leg in Zurich against Grasshoppers and will want to progress to the next round just for the money which that would bring in. But O'Leary seems willing to risk failure in order to prove the point that size does matter.

Given that he has spent £20 million sterling in the past few weeks on Seth Johnson and Robbie Fowler, his claims may sound a little hollow, but neither of those players is available this evening and, with six other first-team squad members injured, the Irishman once again focused on Leeds's numerical shortcomings yesterday. Paul Robinson, Michael Duberry and Jason Wilcox will be the three substitutes.

One player whom O'Leary will certainly be relying upon is Alan Smith. A scorer in the first leg, Smith was edged to the right wing in order to accommodate Fowler at Fulham on Saturday and is set to play there again tonight, without complaint, said the Leeds manager.

The Leeds chairman Peter Ridsdale said last night that there was plenty more cash in the Elland Road transfer kitty for O'Leary to continue his spending spree. A right-winger is next on the shopping list, with Nottingham Forest's teenager Jermaine Jenas and Feyenoord's Australia international Brett Emerton the two targets.

Celtic (0) v Valencia (1)

Celtic Park, kick-off 7.30, (TG4)

If Valencia are trying to pull the wool over Martin O'Neill's eyes by complaining of internal unrest, injuries and general bad feeling before tonight's UEFA Cup tie against Celtic at Parkhead, they have chosen the wrong person.

The Celtic manager, fresh from a decent Champions League effort, said: "It seems every team we have played has had all sorts of problems ahead of matches against us. I will pay no attention to it all."

It is a fact that the Valencia coach Rafael Benitez is skating on thin ice and that the absence of key players in Kili Gonzalez and Adrian Ilie has hardly helped his cause. But O'Neill declared: "People seem to forget that we were without Chris Sutton, Joos Valgaeren, Didier Agathe and Alan Thompson in the first leg and coped fairly well. I believe us missing Agathe is more important to Celtic than the absence of Gonzalez to Valencia."

O'Neill would have been upbeat about his team's chances regardless of goings-on in the Spanish camp, but, because he feels Valencia are capable of snatching a goal to add to their 1-0 lead, he is adamant his players must be mentally prepared to score three.

With that in mind, he mentioned the possibility of playing Sutton, John Hartson and Henrik Larsson in attack. But using three central strikers is a ploy he has used only once, against Kilmarnock, and that ended with Sutton playing in midfield and then at centre half. It is more likely he will go with Sutton and Larsson, with Bobby Petta wide and Hartson on the bench.

"To be serious in Europe we have to be involved after Christmas and we are capable of that," added O'Neill.

Inter Milan (0) v Ipswich (1)

San Siro, kick-off 8.0, (Channel 5)

Two Ipswich fans set off for northern Italy this week in a Mini decorated with the club badge. After the news that Ronaldo is fit to start for Internazionale, they could probably squeeze in all the Italians who believe the Serie A leaders will fail to turn this tie around and still have room in the back.

Yesterday's announcement that the Brazil striker is ready to play was hardly music to the ears of Ipswich as they seek to protect a 1-0 advantage. The San Siro looks intimidating under any circumstances. Tonight George Burley's team could be faced with a forward line of Ronaldo and Christian Vieri, £49.3 million sterling of talent.

That is what Inter Milan splashed out for two of the world's great goalscorers, both of whom missed the trip to Portman Road. Ronaldo has been bedevilled by injuries since hurting his left knee in 1998, but, after several abortive comebacks, his club hope this one is for real. He has featured in five matches this season, playing 131 minutes.

"Ronaldo is feeling well and I will probably call him up," said Inter's coach Hector Cuper. "He is excited that he has completed his recovery from injury but he needs time to become 100 per cent."

His presence would give an even more lopsided look to a game between Italy's league leaders and the Premiership's bottom side. Burley joked that when Ipswich had Ronaldo watched, "he only beat three or four players at a time".

Cuper must decide whether to start the Brazilian or, as many expect, keep him on the bench and begin with his leading scorer Mohamed Kallon.

Paris St Germain (0) v Rangers (0)

Parc des Princes, kick-off 8.0 (Eurosport)

Rangers manager Dick Advocaat has called on his players to live up to the expectations of their huge travelling support by turning chances into goals against Paris St Germain tonight. The Blues were held to a goalless draw in the first leg of the UEFA Cup third-round clash at Ibrox after missing a series of chances.

But Advocaat warns Rangers - backed by around 4,000 travelling Scots - cannot afford to waste valuable chances again if they are to prove they deserve to be ranked among the best in Europe. He said: "Until one week ago, before the Celtic match, we scored a lot of goals. You can see what can happen in one week, in three games. The players have to show that they can also score the goals against top teams because they are top players and they have to show it against the smaller teams."

Rangers survived a scare on their arrival in Paris when the pilot of their chartered plane had to abort landing with just seconds to spare. Pilot Steve Westmacott had to take evasive action when he spotted an American airliner still on the runway as he approached. Rangers' aircraft was forced to circle around the capital for 20 minutes before making a successful landing.

Advocaat will be without striker Shota Arveladze, who is ineligible, and midfielder Fernando Ricksen, who is suspended following his first leg sending-off. Defender Michael Ball did not travel because of a knee injury and Neil McCann and Christian Nerlinger are also on the injury-list.

PSG coach Luis Fernandez has confirmed striker Nicolas Anelka was back in the squad. Fernandez reckoned the tie was evenly poised but also said he believed his side would be out of the competition sooner or later.
