Ulster left to play for pride

Ulster v Gwent, Ravenhill, 7

Ulster v Gwent, Ravenhill, 7.45: For the first time since Alan Solomons arrived at Ravenhill in 2001, Ulster will go into their final pool game with nothing but pride to play for.

The irony is not lost on Solomons, given that this season's side has improved beyond recognition over the last three campaigns; but life hasn't been easy in the tournament's pool of death.

Ulster's narrow defeat at Stade Francais last Saturday, when a first win on French soil was in their grasp before the visitors were pickpocketed by Diego Dominguez, left the northerners praying for a Leicester slip-up at the Dragons.

The Tigers, however, did not fall into the same trap that accounted for Ulster and Stade at Rodney Parade, and the bonus-point victory ensured Solomons's side can play only for second place in Pool One, and with just 10 points in the bag, that means another early bath.

Nevertheless, the prospect of adding the Celtic League to their Celtic Cup success before Christmas has helped keep spirits high at Ravenhill, and the prospect of a table-topping clash with Llanelli in Belfast next Friday will stave away any demob-happy sloppiness tonight.

That, and a determination to perform in front of what is expected to be a full house of 12,500 at Ravenhill.

Solomons, for whom this could be his last match in charge of a European tie at Ravenhill, having been linked with a move to Northampton Saints, has made just one enforced change to his starting line-up with Neil Best returning to openside in place of Neil McMillan, who has a slight knee injury. Warren Brosnihan steps up to the bench.

Wales Under-21 prop Rhys Thomas makes his first start for the Dragons, while Rhodri Jones and Craig Warlow form a new half-back partnership.

Lee Jarvis has a virus, so Warlow - who showed his class when replacing Jarvis towards the end of last week's loss against Leicester - starts at outhalf.

Jason Forster misses his first game of the season with an ankle injury, so Jamie Ringer starts at openside flanker, with Rhys Oakley on the other flank.

The Dragons have punched above their weight so far, but it is hard to look past another Ulster victory at Fortress Ravenhill.
