FOR the first time since the open draw came into operation in hockey's Irish Senior Cup two decades ago, there is the possibility that there will not be an Ulster team in the final. In the semi-finals of the Nissan-sponsored competition on March 13th, both Lisnagarvey and Annadale have been drawn away, to Three Rock Rovers and Cork C of I, respectively.

After their hard-earned defeat of Avoca, it is the best outcome for the favourites, C of I (last winners in completing a treble in 1969) for in welcoming Annadale to Garryduff, they will be playing the least mature side to have reached the last-four stage. Annadale, though, will be respected for their elimination of the holders, Instonians, and while yet to win the trophy, this will be their third successive semi-final appearance.

Three Rock Rovers, who edged out Annadale en route to last seaons's final, will be hoping to capitalise on home advantage against illustrious Lisnagarvey, captained by Alan Dowd in quest of his ninth cup medal. Although neither team was impressive in ousting Glenanne and Pembroke Wanderers, respectively, they will be expected to rise to the occasion at Grange Road to rekindle memories of great contests of the 60s involving these two clubs.

Annadale's visit to Cork means that the spotlight will be on the southern capital for the next three weekends, for C of I meet Harlequins next Sunday in the deciding match of the Munster Senior League. C of I will be hoping that injuries won't be aggravated in this match with the cup semi-final in view. Later in the month, March 19th-21st, Garryduff will be the venue for the Celtic four-nations under-21 tournament.
