Manchester United fans have called off their protest on Cheltenham Gold Cup day on March 18th.
The announcement came less than 48 hours after Alex Ferguson's plea for supporters not to disrupt horse racing's "equivalent of the FA Cup".
While some influential fans were outraged at Ferguson's comments, feeling the United boss would have been better keeping his nose out of their business,
Sean Murphy, co-founder of the United4action group that was organising the Cheltenham protests, confirmed the intention to cancel.
"In view of the statement made by Sir Alex Ferguson on Saturday, United4action is postponing our planned racecourse protest at the Cheltenham festival on March 18th," said Murphy.
The move will be greeted with relief by United officials, including Ferguson, who feared the reputation of the club could be severely damaged if the protest got out of hand, especially as it concerned him personally.
However, even if Magnier and McManus are allowed to enjoy the Festival in relative peace, fans have warned the pair if they sense any further disruption to their club, they will target other horse racing interests for demonstration.
