Who said synchronised diving was for the second-rate competitors? Dmitry Sautin, Russia's reigning Olympic high-board champion, was part of the duo that won the men's synchronised 10m platform title.

In partnership with Igor Lukashin, Sautin prevailed in a duel with China's Hu Jia and Tian Liang to repeat the order in the preceding women's synchronised three-metre springboard event, in which fellow European champions Vera Ilyina and Yulia Pakhalina beat China's Fu Mingxia and Guo Jingjing.

For Germany's Jan Hempel, who won the bronze medal with Heiko Meyer, it was a second medal in four Olympic appearances. Hempel, a 29-year-old father of two, is the only four-time Olympic diver at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

He won his first medal in Atlanta, winning the silver in the 10m Platform. He and first-time Olympian Meyer began training together in 1998.
