Manchester United have finally agreed a new club record fee with PSV Eindhoven for Dutch international Jaap Stam

Manchester United have finally agreed a new club record fee with PSV Eindhoven for Dutch international Jaap Stam. He will cost £10 million sterling, which is a world record for a defender.

PSV had turned down two previous offers from the champions for Stam, who they had originally valued at £15 million.

United solicitor and director Maurice Watkins said: "The deal is very well advanced and now it's a case of documenting the discussions between the clubs and agreeing personal terms with the player."

Stam, 25, offered to waive his 15 per cent cut of the transfer fee and it is understood that this has helped to bring the deal about.

Glenn Hoddle has warned he is ready to take legal action against Uri Geller after the psychic claimed the England coach visited him for advice.

Geller claims that Hoddle went to his Berkshire mansion. But English Football Association spokesman David Davies yesterday said that Hoddle was "expected" to take legal action over a story in a Sunday newspaper which carried the claims. Yesterday afternoon, Hoddle said: "The story is an extraordinary combination of lies, inaccuracies, exaggerations and misleading innuendoes."
