Athletics: Tanya Van Heer, the accomplished Australian sprinter, will be among the overseas athletes in action at the meeting to celebrate the opening of the Castleisland track on Sunday week, reports Peter Byrne.

Van Heer, a silver medalist in the world indoor championships, will race Heide Seyerling of South Africa over 200 metres, in what promises to be one of the highlights of the AAI Games.

Sixteen-year-old Georgie Clarke, who is something of a sensation in America, will compete at 1,000 metres, while two more Australians, Kate Richardson and Sarah Jamieson, give promise of a sharp duel over 3,000 metres.

Gareth Turnbull, in search of an A standard for the Olympic 1,500 metres championship, is included in an Ireland selection to compete in another of the Road to Sydney meetings in Bedford next Sunday.

Rugby: Scotland produced a fine second-half display before going down 45-42 to the Barbarians in a thrilling encounter at Murrayfield last night. Scotland, featuring only six of the players who started against England in the Calcutta Cup victory in April, trailed 33-16 at the interval. The Barbarians had too much power on the wings with Joel Vidiri and Dan Luger scoring five tries between them.
