Golf: Bo Van Pelt completed a six-shot victory in the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic in Malaysia on Sunday. The American claimed his second success in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event with a final round of 64 that blew the 48-man field apart.
Van Pelt led by one overnight and was quickly into his stride with a tap-in birdie at the par-five third, which was swiftly followed by another birdie at the fourth.
Playing partner Jeff Overton was still in touch at the turn after picking up a shot at the ninth but the players went their separate ways coming home.
They both birdied the long 11th but while Overton dropped shots at the 12th and 13th, Van Pelt went on a birdie spree that saw him almost hole his approach to the 13th and also his tee shot to the next.
He followed those tap-ins with another fine up-and-down at the short par-four 15th to give himself a seven-shot lead that was never likely to be overhauled.
Another birdie at the 17th saw him finish on a 23-under-par total following a flawless final day.
Overton held on to second place on -17 with a closing 69 with Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson third following a 68.
American Cameron Tringale matched Van Pelt's 64 to charge through the field and claim a tie for fourth place alongside Camilo Villegas (66) and Mark Wilson (69).
"I played well all day, didn't make any bogeys and tried to stick with my gameplan," said Van Pelt, who picked up a cheque for €900,000. "I had a chance to win a couple of times this year and didn't come out on top.
"I just wanted to learn from that and do a better job when I have the lead. I take a lot of satisfaction from how I played today. I have three young kids at home and so enjoy my time in the off-season but luckily my wife and caddie talked me into coming and I wanted to come and do my best."
