Joint overnight leader Bruce Vaughan carded a level-par 71 to claim the outright lead after the second round of the Senior British Open at Royal Troon today.

The American, who had a topsy-turvy opening 68 including eight birdies, recorded 14 pars in blustery conditions at the Scottish links course to finish with a three-under total of 139.

Countryman John Cook (71) was one shot adrift, with joint overnight leader Eduardo Romero (73) of Argentina, holder Tom Watson (71) and German Bernhard Langer (71) sharing third place on 141.

Australian Greg Norman, equal third in last week's British Open at Royal Birkdale, returned a 72 for 147.
