During my recent visit to the embryonic Greg Norman creation at Doonbeg, the developers spoke proudly of what had been achieved at their first undertaking at Kiawah Island, which received an international baptism from the 1991 Ryder Cup. So, how are things there, nine years on?
Well, it was the location for the Robert Redford movie The Legend of Bagger Vance, which had its American launch in Charleston yesterday. It is doing splendid business with 37,000 rounds per year, at $225 per round. And they have recently introduced guides, or forecaddies, to "direct golfers through the checkered fairways and sloping greens."
