Representative match/Wales - 42 Barbarians - 0: Wales romped to a 42-0 victory over the Barbarians at Ashton Gate last night - but their stylish win was marred when they had fullback Gareth Thomas stretchered off nursing an ankle injury.

Midway through the second period, Thomas was carried off after being hurt in a tackle. Welsh rugby's player of the year, who is set to sign for Toulouse today, looked in agony as he left the field.

And with the Wales squad leaving for Argentina next week, his tour prospects appear bleak.

The first half belonged to Wales outhalf Ceri Sweeney, who weaved his way over for a 12th-minute try that he also converted and then added two penalties to secure a 13-0 lead at the break.

After the interval, centre Sonny Parker and lock Gareth Llewellyn linked well in midfield, allowing wing Shane Williams to cut back inside and send Thomas over for a try that Sweeney converted.

With a 20-point advantage, Wales looked to start broadening their horizons, and they soon collected a third try when Rhys Williams crossed in the corner.

Dwayne Peel powered over for a 65th-minute try that made it 30-0 and centre Gavin Henson and substitute Hal Luscombe added tries, as Sweeney finished with 17 points. It was the first time the Barbarians had failed to score since Newport beat them 30-0, 26 years ago.
