Golf: Ireland's Paul Cutler and Alan Dunbar have been called up to the Walker Cup team to face America at Royal Aberdeen on September 10th-11th.
Despite a disappointing end for Ireland to last weekend’s Home International at Rosses Point, Portstewart’s Cutler (22) was outstanding, and the reigning Irish Close and West of Ireland champion was always a frontrunner for the team.
Dunbar (21) hails from Rathmore Golf Club and also impressed at the weekend. He has already tasted victory in the Irish Amateur Open last year and the Northern Ireland Championship.
“I am pleased with the team. I am sure a number of players will be disappointed to miss out,” said captain Nigel Edwards after revealing his selection.
Tom Lewis, the 20-year-old from Welwyn Garden City who led The Open with an amateur record 65 last month, is one of five English players named in the side.
Compatriot Stiggy Hodgson is the only survivor from the team beaten 16.5 - 9.5 at Merion two years ago. The other English players are national champion Steven Brown, Jack Senior and Andy Sullivan.
Welshman Rhys Pugh is, at 17, by far the youngest member, while Scotland are represented by Michael Stewart and James Byrne, runners-up in the last two Amateur Championships.
