Garryowen - 28 Blackrock College 16: Garryowen retain their second position in Division One of the AIB League as a result of the 28-16 victory over Blackrock College at Dooradoyle yesterday. David Wallace returned for his first match since the Ireland v New Zealand game on November17th.
Wallace entered the fray with half an hour to play and came through without any ill effects for his injured shoulder. He will come into consideration for the Munster team to play Castres in the crucial European cup tie next Saturday.
Former Garryowen player, Conor Kilroy, landed two early penalties for Blackrock; but the remainder of the first half was dominated by Garryowen. Peter Malone scored a splendid individual try. They were awarded a penalty try when Kevin O'Riordan was obstructed with the line at his mercy. Both tries were converted by Billy Treacy, who also landed a penalty, to put Garryowen 17-6 ahead at the interval.
Treacy stretched their lead with another penalty after the resumption; but Blackrock then narrowed the arrears to four points after a penalty by Kilroy and a try by Michael Jackson, which Kilroy converted.
However, Wallace's arrival appeared to inspire Garryowen and they regained control with a penalty by Treacy and a fine try in the left corner by Kevin O'Riordan.
