Sligo Football final/St Mary's 2-5 Tourlestrane 1-8: Matthew Walsh kept tenacious Tourlestrane in the Sligo Championship with two late second-half points in this lacklustre final at Markievicz Park yesterday.
Mark Breheny, who bagged 2-3 of the Saints' total, put the Sligo town side in pole position with a 57th-minute goal followed by a pointed free, which put them two points ahead.
But Walsh, who captained Tourlestrane when they last won the Owen B Hunt Cup, in 1997, then took centre stage, rescuing the south-county side with a couple of accurate frees, the leveller coming deep into stoppage-time.
Gerry McGowan had opened the scoring with a Tourlestrane point after 20 seconds' play.
Séamus Burns got St Mary's off the mark in the fourth minute and Tourlestrane were four points ahead when Sligo intercounty player Breheny got through for a rather simple goal after 27 minutes, Gerry McGowan having missed a goal chance for Tourlestrane five minutes earlier.
The sides were level, 1-2 to 0-5, at half-time.
McGowan gave Tourlestrane the lead at the start of the second half before former Westmeath player Ger Heavin opened the St Mary's account.
Tourlestrane appeared to be on their way to victory when John Marren blasted the ball to the St Mary's net eight minutes from time after Gerry McGowan's free came off the post.
But that late rally spearheaded by Breheny kept the men in red and black in the game, and the competition.
