Cup and Shields update: Warrenpoint knocked out the defending Senior Cup champions Co Sligo to book their place in tomorrow's final where they will play Castletroy after the Limerick champions defeated yesterday's Barton Shield winners Portmarnock.

With their blend of youth and experience, Warrenpoint ran out comfortable 3.5-1.5 winners against the holders here at Monkstown Golf Club.

Paul Reavey put Warrenpoint's first point on the board after his 3 and 1 win over Gary McDermott in the top match. Although Michael Durcan levelled with his 3 and 1 win over Ryan Gribben, the Co Down club were able to call on a wealth of experience.

Former Walker Cup player Paddy Gribben defeated Barry Anderson 2 and 1 while Colin Campbell jnr had the measure of David Dunne 3 and 2 in the bottom match. Veteran Jim Carvill halved with Seryth Heavey after the overall outcome had already been decided.

In the earlier semi-final Portmarnock ran out of steam after their convincing Barton Shield win yesterday and lost to Castletroy 3.5-1.5.

Niall Goulding was inspirational in the top match for the Dublin club when he birdied the 18th to force extra holes against Eamonn Haugh. The two-time West of Ireland winner then sealed the win with another birdie two at the first extra hole.

However, there was little to write home about for Portmarnock in the remaining matches as Jason Tobin (2 and 1), Stephen Moloney (3 and 2) and John Kavanagh (3 and 2) all won for Castletroy while Cian Daly's match with Michael Brett was halved.

Limerick won the Pierce Purcell Shield for the first time after they defeated defending champions Warrenpoint 3.5-1.5 in a highly entertaining match. Limerick captain Ger Naughton was delighted with his team and the overall performance.

"It's a great result, a first for the club. We looked in trouble in the early stages but we improved our game and got the better of Warrenpoint," said the beaming captain.

"I've done something Nick Faldo can't do, I've won the Pierce Purcell."

Elsewhere host club Monkstown totally outplayed Strandhill to win 4-1 and book their place in tomorrow's final of the Jimmy Bruen Shield.

The top three matches all recorded big wins to quickly end the contest as the final two matches were called in. The Cork club will now play Clontarf, who overcame a determined Co Cavan side 4-1.

The end result doesn't tell the full story for two matches went into extra time before Michael Kellett and Neal Flynn won at the 20th to secure the overall win.
