Monaghan United were left kicking their heels at losing their one hundred per cent first division record as Waterford United stole a 2-1 win at Gortakeegan yesterday with a 91st minute goal.
Anthony Mitchell gave Monaghan a sixth minute lead from a cleverly worked free-kick. An error by Monaghan goalkeeper Robert Hannon, when he dropped a free-kick, presented David Breen with the equaliser nine minutes later.
Waterford snatched the points a minute into added time when Hannon could only parry a shot in a crowded goalmouth and Alan Kirby shot home from close range.
Athlone Town registered the biggest win of the new season in trouncing much depleted Cobh Ramblers 5-1 at St Colman's Park on Saturday night to go top of the table on goal difference ahead of Dundalk.
