SCHOOLS' RUGBY: St Andrew's overturned a 16-point deficit at Kilternan yesterday to win by the narrowest of margins. In a throwback to their win over Terenure College in 1989, St Andrew's pulled out all the stops in the final 20 minutes with number eight Kirwan Waters sending over the winning points with five minutes to go.
Pres Bray, having gone in front from a Killian Cassoni try, surprisingly went behind on the quarter hour. Rory Rees-Brennan won possession for St Andrew's from a lineout on Pres's 22. The ball was released to the backs and centre and captain Jack Doran went over for a try with Waters converting.
But Bray regained the initiative with well-worked scores from Stephen Greenan and Stephen Dempsey, coupled with the kicking of Cassoni, taking them into a 23-7 lead early in the second half.
It was to be their last score, however, as converted tries from Paul Hamilton and Doran took St Andrew's to within two points of their opponents.
With five minutes remaining St Andrew's were handed a penalty after Pres Bray had infringed off the side of a ruck. Waters kept his nerve to land his team a place in the next round.
