Wayside the better team but fail to take chances

WAYSIDE CELTIC and Waterford United must meet again after their FAI Cup second round replay ended in a draw at the Golden Ball, Kilternan, yesterday.

Wayside, who were generally the better side for long spells, at least took some solace from the fact that they won the toss for the second replay venue. It's back to Kilternan next Tuesday for a 2.0 pm kick off. Penalties are scheduled, if necessary.

But, it must be said, the Leinster Senior League side will rue another lost opportunity to enter the quarter finals at the expense of a side they knocked out of the same competition four years ago.

Waterford will simply be thankful they are still in this morning's draw for the last eight.

Having dominated at the Regional Sports Centre on Sunday, Wayside begun where they left off yesterday, beating the better chances before Waterford stole a 38th minute lead.

Colin Talbot shot straight at Scott Garlich after 24 minutes and Derek Jackson did likewise three minutes later for the home side before Brian Barry struck for an undeserved lead goal for Waterford.

Colin Fanning's cross from the left was skillfully controlled and laid off by Pascal Keane for Barry to beat Robbie O'Dowd in the Wayside goal with a left foot drive into the far corner of the net from 20 yards.

Wayside's top scorer, Paddy Geraghty, who got both goals in the previous round against Cherry Orchard, then blazed a fine chance over Garlich's cross bar four minutes before the break.

Wayside continued to be the better side, and they got their just reward, if somewhat fortuitously, eight minutes into the second half. Garlich first jumped to claim a cross from the right by Talbot, but he lost control as he landed and the ball rebounded off Barry for an own goal.

O'Dowd saved well with his feet from Michael Downey in the 61st minute as Waterford wasted their best chance to restore their lead.

But it was Wayside who should have won it with two further attacks in normal time. Substitute Frank Byrne forced a great stop from Garlich after 65 minutes while fellow substitute Mark Byrne hit the foot of a post four minutes from time.

In extra time, Frank Byrne again forced a fine tip over save from the impressive Garlich. Not to be outdone, O'Dowd did well to hold onto a Barry free minutes later as the tie headed for a third meeting.
