Arch rivals Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam found themselves in a win-win situation when the LPGA season came to a close in the US last weekend. While the Australian gained the distinction of becoming the first player to win the Tour Championship twice, Sorenstam broke her rival's scoring record.

In blustery conditions on the Trump International stretch in Florida, Webb closed with a four-under-par 68 for a two-stroke victory over Sorenstam in the Tyco/ADT championship. Yet when it was all over, the Swede wore the bigger smile.

Needing the best round of the tournament to break the LPGA Tour's season scoring record, Sorenstam did so with a tremendous charge. Covering the final 10 holes in six under par for a 65, she set a new standard of 69.42 which was .01 strokes better than Webb's mark in 1999.

"I was shooting for a number: I don't normally do that," said Sorenstam, who gained the distinction earlier this year of becoming the first player in LPGA history to card a 59.

Though the score failed to deliver what would have been her ninth victory of the year, she pumped her fist and let out a yell when a birdie on the 17th brought her to her target of seven under.

It was only after two-putting the 18th for par that she discovered six-under would have been sufficient to break the record. "All that work and then they tell me," she said.

With nine-under-par 279, Webb earned $215,000 for her third victory of the year. "I've had a good year, and to finish it off with a win really tops it off," she said.

Her other successes were the US Women's Open and the LPGA Championship, making her the youngest winner of the career Grand Slam.

Sorenstam, who finished on 281, earned $115,000 to become the first $2 million woman in golf, finishing her record-setting season with $2,105,868. Webb went over the $1.5 million mark for the third straight season.
